Aftercare

Aftercare is very important in order to prevent sensitivity or problems after the client has left your treatment room. You should make sure you give any advice and recommendations accurately and constructively. Make sure the client understands the aftercare advice, and always provide a written explanation for extra clarity. You should make sure that the aftercare advice you offer is specific to your clients needs based on the treatment they have just had.

You should advise the clients of the kinds of products available for home use that they may find beneficial. After-wax lotion containing ingredients such as tea tree, lavender, aloe vera, azulene and witch-hazel ensure effective skin healing. Antiseptic creams can be applied to reduce the risk of infection occurring after waxing. Avoid using highly perfumed products that may cause irritation such as body lotions and deodorants. When the skin has completely calmed down the client may reduce the risk of ingrown hairs by using a body scrub or facial exfoliant on a regular basis. A loofah can also combat ingrown hairs. Body lotion can also keep the skin soft and supple, again minimising the risk of ingrown hairs.

The client should be advised that it is perfectly normal to experience some slight soreness, small bumps and redness after their treatment. The symptoms should normally subside over the next 24-48 hours. If symptoms persist for longer, or if the red spots develop yellow heads, the client should contact you for advice. The client should be told to seek medical advice if they are concerned about any reaction to the treatment or if the reaction is more severe and they salon cannot be reached.

You should give the client the following aftercare advice for the first 24 to 48 hours after their treatment:

Occasionally some clients do suffer from ingrown hairs following wax treatment. If this occurs, the client should be advised to gently exfoliate the skin three times a week in the bath or shower using an exfoliating mitt or product. You should also recommend that the client moisturises the area everyday to help to keep the skin soft and help new hairs to grow through normally.

Some clients may notice a small amount of re-growth after a week or so. It can take up to four treatments for the hair to get on a growth cycle that gives best results. Hair needs to be at least a centimetre long before it can be successfully removed by waxing so clients should be advised not to shave between appointments. To maintain a smooth appearance, the client should make a waxing appointment every 4-6 weeks.
