Perform Manual Massage – Hand & Arm

BM017 Perform Manual Massage Treatments – Hand & Arm Massage

Hand and Arm Massage

Starting on the arm nearest to you, apply the massage oil to the arm using alternate hands to perform sweeping strokes from the top of the shoulder to the fingertips.
Repeat this movement twice.

Pull the arm slightly away from the body and support it with one hand at the wrist. Perform effleurage movements up the whole of the inside of the arm from the wrist to the shoulder with the other hand. When the hand comes back down, use this one to support the arm whilst the other hand effleurages the outside of the arm. Repeat this four times.
Deep effleurage around the posterior fibres of the deltoid muscle, contouring your palm around the muscle. Repeat this movement twice and then finger knead around the muscle the same amount of times.

Palmar knead the upper arm, sliding upwards before sliding back to the elbow. Repeat this ten times, working mainly on the bicep muscle. Swap your supporting hand over to palmar knead the triceps, working upwards before sliding back down. Repeat this movement ten times before repeating the entire sequence twice.
Finger knead around the elbow joint.

Thumb knead using small, circular frictions along the interosseous membrane up to the elbow then slide back to the wrist. These can also be done with the fingers.
Repeat this three times.

Stroke over the anterior of the wrist using the thumbs.
Use your thumbs to perform scissor movements to the interior and posterior aspects of the wrist.

Link the fingers of one hand in with the client’s whilst supporting the wrist with your other hand. Flex and extend the wrist joint twice, taking it as far back as is comfortable for the client.
Gently rotate the wrist, twice clockwise and twice anti-clockwise.

Use one hand to support each finger as you massage the digits one at a time, down towards the matrix of the nail, starting at the thumb. When you have massaged, give the digit a slight pull from the bottom.

Thumb knead the metacarpal spaces, taking care not to put too much pressure on them to avoid causing discomfort.

Turn the client’s hand over so that the palm is facing upwards. Use the thumbs to massage the thenar and hyper thenar muscles. Work into the fleshy part of the palm. Repeat this movement ten times.

Use the heel of the hand to work up the palm and back down to the fingers. Repeat this twice.

To complete the arm massage, perform alternate effleurage movements as you did before. Place the arm back on the couch and sandwich the hand in between your hands and hold like this for a few seconds before recovering the arm. Repeat the massage on the left arm.
